COMEDY AND HUMOR CLUB -- Laugh and Feel Great!

"We don't laugh because we're happy

we're happy because we laugh,” William James

by Rose Marcus 301-598-8777

On Tuesday July 21, we had a very unusual fun session. Vice President Marvin Swartz arranged to show on the big screen the films that his son took of our Independence Day parade. Not only were there pictures of our club's participants, but all the other entries that were in the parade as well. The film was enjoyed by all our members.

Participantss who came before the mike were Rose Papier, Sam Hack, and Ellie Weingarton and Sue Aiken did a skit about two females with a problem. Next at the mike was Blanche Cherpack, Sally Barchat, Marty Brownstein and Ellie again doing a solo. Roy Rosfeld came before the mike as well as Jo Mauro, Jerry Kurman and Millie Siegel. Marvin Swartz and Betty Lesser did a two part skit, and then Amette Fasteau, Mim Parizer, me and Jack Melnick finished out the day of fun.

It was announced that we are selling our joke book, entitled "The Jokes on Us," for $3 a book. These are great for visits to sick people or shutins. They also are a good gift when you visit someone. Our treasurer, Rose Papier, will take your $3 either before or after our meeting. She is also collecting our yearly dues of $5. Rose says, "Where can you go for $5 and have such fun each Tuesday, and enjoy yourself?"

Former President, Jack Melnick is in charge of our Traveling Troupe. He can arrange for entertainment for your party or special occasion. For more information, call Jack (3015987858).

I would like to share with you a health article I read entitled "A Chuckle A Day." It states; "Looking for an aerobic routine that won't make you groan and sweat? Try exercising your funny bone. Robust laughter raises your heart rate and gives muscles of the chest, face and abdomen a good workout, says Dr. William F. Fry, Jr., of Stanford University, a pioneer humor researcher. As laughter subsides, the muscles relax, which Fry says may help relieve stress and pain. Laughter also elevates an immune substance that wards off respiratory illnesses, according to researchers of Western New England College in Springfield, Massachusetts. In a study of 10 volunteers, those who watched a Richard Pryor videotape had a temporary but significant rise in salivary immunoglobulin A. Viewing a serious film had no effect. To brighten your life with laughter, take a humor break every day. Watch a funny television show, read your favorite comic strip or check out a comedy album from the local library. Remember, they who laugh, last." To brighten your life with laughter, as the article states, why not visit the Comedy and Humor Club and experience the humor our club provides. If you visit us you are sure to laugh. It will be good for your health. We meet every Tuesday at 1:30 PM in Clubhouse II. Meanwhile stay happy.

JULY 21, 2009 ISSUE     BY ROSE MARCUS, 301-598-8777

INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE:  The weather was beautiful. It was as if we had put in an order for the pleasant breeze that kept us comfortable while watching the program.  Our club decorated two cars.  Vice President, Marvin Swartz decorated his car with the help of Betty Lesser and Rose Papier.  This writer decorated her car with Laura Rosfeld using her creative skill once again.

Our club unexpectedly had some laughs during the parade.  As we were getting ready to make the u-turn at Gleneagles, former Presidents, Mim Parizer and Fred Firnbacher were carrying the club’s banner and the red hat that Mim was wearing blew off and went traveling up Leisure World Blvd.  Herb Rubman, was marching with us, and started running after the hat.  When he bent down to reach it a number of times, the wind blew it further away.  So Herb kept running, after it till he finally caught the hat.   The crowd watching the parade all laughed at the incident.  So Comedy and Humor provided some laughs unexpectedly.

Those who participated in the parade were me, Marvin Swartz, Betty Lesser and Jack Melnick, who rode his decorated bike.   Also

Fred Firnbacher, Mim Parizer, Irene and Sid Spector, Jerry Kurman, Blanche Cherpack, Rose Papier, Flora Feld, Irv Kabik, Ellie Weingarten, Sally Barchat, Selma Perry, Helen Rosenblum Eleanor Prissman and Herb Rubman participated.

JUNE 30TH SPECIAL PROGRAM:  Mim Parizer organized and was the Mistress of Ceremonies.  We were to tell a funny or interesting story from the past.  This was a very good program and many members requested that we do it again soon.  Those who came before the mike with their stories were, this writer, Marty Brownstein, Dolly Bennof, Harry Kuptzin, Fred Firnbacher, Irene and Sid Spector, Jack Melnick, Flora Feld, Rose Papier, Florence Lipsky, Stanley Galif, Blanche Cherpack, Herb Rubman and Roy Rosfeld.  It ended delightfully with Mim singing a parody of “Thanks for Your Memories.”

Our 4th joke book, entitled “The Laughs On Us” is being sold at $3.00 a book.  It is a great gift for someone recuperating, or shit-ins.  It is also a great gift as a thank you when invited to dinner, or if someone has done something nice for you and you want to reward them.  These may be purchased either before or after our meeting.

You will brighten the faces of people who hear or read the jokes.  They will smile and laugh and say, “thank you for bringing me something to make me laugh.”

Also that is a good time to pay your yearly dues of $5.00.  Our Treasurer, Rose Papier, gets to the club early in order to accommodate our members who want to do either of the above things.

We sing songs, tell jokes, and tease each other.   Our club’s motto is:  “Laughter is the best medicine.  It is a tranquilizer with no adverse side effects.”  Therefore, write yourself a prescription to be our guest any Tuesday at 1:30PM in Clubhouse II and experience the humor our club provides.  In the meantime, keep a positive attitude, laugh a lot and stay in good health. If you visit us you are sure to laugh.  See you there.

Independence Day Parade:  Every year, since the club was organized 22 years ago, we have participated in the parade. We decorate our cars and our members march with our Comedy and Humor Club banner.  We wear red, white and blue and Sid Spector always takes pictures of us which go in our album.

Yearly Dues Are Due:  Treasurer, Rose Papier is collecting dues for June 2009 to the end of May 2010. If you are not able to attend our next few meetings you may mail your $5 yearly dues to Rose at 15100 Interlachen Drive, #202, Silver Spring, MD 20906. To quote Rose, “Where can you go for $5 a year, and have so much fun every week?” Rose is also selling our fourth joke book entitled, “The Jokes on Us.” It is only $3, and is a great gift for visiting, or for people recuperating.

Mim Parizer organized our monthly planned program on June 30.  There will be more about this in the next issue of the Leisure World News.

On June 16, our members came to the mike with various humorous jokes. The highlight of the fun session was when Fred Firnbacher and Roy Rosfeld did a two part skit about Fred wanting to buy a computer from Roy, who was the salesman. It reminded us of the Abbott and Costello skit entitled “Who’s On First.”  Fred asked the questions and Roy always came up with answers that Fred could not comprehend. Roy said, “We have windows” and Fred responded, “I already have windows in my office.” After a long conversation that Fred could not understand, he asked, “How do you turn off the computer?” Roy’s answer was, “You push start.” You just had to be there to experience how funny this presentation was.

On June 23, Rose, Millie Siegel, Flora Feld, Sam Hack, Blanche Cherpack, Betty Lesser, Ellie Weingarten, Marty Brownstein, Sumner Levin, Marvin Swartz and Harry Kuptzin came before the mike. Fred Firnbacher started off with a parody written by Allen Sherman, entitled “Hello Muddah, Hello Foddah.”  (Translation:  “Hello Mother, Hello Father.”)  It was a letter a youngster wrote to his parents about his first day in camp. Jerry Kerman came to the mike, to tell his joke, wearing a different hat. Dolly Bennof was next with a number of songs. Gloria Horwitz always comes up with something unusual, and her presentation was very funny. Mim Parizer, this writer and Jack Melnick gave their jokes. MC Irene Spector handed out the chorus for us to sing, and she then sang various paragraphs of a song, and we ended up singing the following:  “How do I know my youth is all spent.  My get-up and go has got up and went.  But in spite of it all I’m able to grin,  when I think of the places my get-up has been.”  It was a fun afternoon.

Be our guest on your visit to our club and experience the singing, jokes, skits, celebrations and the teasing that goes on. The interaction between the presenter and the audience is always fun.  As an example, his past week, when Vice President Marvin Swartz gave his presentation, the audience and he had more fun when Marvin stated that his material was not good. We are a friendly, fun-loving group. You do not have to be a performer. We need listeners and clappers as well as performers.

We meet every Tuesday, in the Exercise Room of Clubhouse II at 1:30 PM. Till then stay happy, and keep smiling.

by Rose Marcus

Our next column in the Leisure World News will include the details of what happened at our May 26th luncheon, which celebrated our 22nd year.

June starts a new season for the club, and we be collecting dues of $5 for the year. Those who want to be with us when we have our Independence Day parade on Friday, July 3 can sign up at our meetings in June or contact this writer to have your name placed on the list of participants.

At our meeting on May 19, the first jokester who came before the mike was Vice President Marvin Swartz. Stuart Bonwit and Ellie Weingarten did a two-part skit. Next was Flora Feld, Larry Sturm, Betty Lesser and Marty Brownstein. Ellie Weingarten returned to the mike with Irv Kabik to entertain us. Then came Sumner Levine, and the duo of Mim Parizer and Fred Firnbacher had us laughing with a funny tongtwister. Millie Siegel was next, then Betty Staroba, Sally Barchat and Jerry Kurman with a funny hat performed. Mim Parizer told some jokes, and this writer read a joke from a lawyer joke book.

A quote from an article on health states: "In Schenectady, New York, patients at the Sunny View Hospital and Rehabilitation Center hit the road to recovery in part by visiting the "humor room" on the third floor. They can check out funny books, tapes and music or such mirth makers as clown noses, balloons and bottles of bubble soap. 'Humor makes patients happy,' says Connelly BrunerTodt, hospital humor coordinator, 'And happy patients usually work harder to recover.'

Laughter, say many medical experts is good for those who are sickand for those who want to stay well. Psycologist William James said, "We don't laugh because we're happy we're happy because we laugh.'" That is the way the members of our club feel. In fact, one way to get a lot of laughs, besides attending our fun sessions, is to read our latest joke book, entitled "The Joke's On Us." We have reduced the price to $3 and it contains pages of jokes that will tickle your funny bone.

Curious about our club? We invite you to be our guest for two sessions before deciding to become a member. We meet every Tuesday at 1:30 PM in Clubhouse II. Until then keep smiling and laughing. It is good for your health.

Good News! You can "Have a Laugh On Us" as the sign in the picture shows. That is because our fourth joke book, entitled "The Jokes on Us," has been reduced to $3. You can purchase them before or after our meetings. They are great for gifts for shutins or people recuperating. Our club's motto is: Laughter is the best medicine.

Laughter is a tranquilizer with no adverse side effects." Therefore, write yourself a prescription as our guest and visit our fun session any Tuesday at 1:30 PM in Clubhouse II and experience the humor our club provides.

In the meantime, keep a positive attitude, laugh a lot, stay in good health and keep smiling. If you visit us you are sure to laugh. It will be good for your health.

        See you there.

Now that this writer has returned from Florida, she wants to thank Roy Rosfeld for writing this column. It is important that our members are able to read about what dates and what plans we have to make you laugh. However, I want to take this opportunity to tell those people who don't know about our club, what our history is, and what we do now to enjoy laughter.

Twenty‑two years ago in May, five others and I met in Clubhouse I to organize what we called, "THE COMEDY AND HUMOR CLUB." The idea caught on and a month later we had 20 members. The club has grown, and now, every Tuesday at 1:30PM in Clubhouse II our loyal members get together weekly to sing songs, tell jokes and do skits. For and hour and a half we listen and laugh. Another fun thing is the unexpected teasing.

Our club's name has bad a lot of versions. One year, when we were marching in the Leisure World's July 4th parade. we turned into the cascade area. and the MC announced: "Ladies and Gentlemen, here comes the ‑Good Humor Club." When I was introduced to someone in the community, she said, "I know who you are, you're Comedy and Humor's fun lady." This of course, was followed by laughter. I am also pleased with what we have accomplished, because I feel that we do so much good at our weekly get‑togethers. Many people have said that they were feeling low, and that after attending our fun session, came away feeling so much lighter.

We also have a number of parties. For Halloween, costumed members have a parade and are interviewed by Jack Melnick. We have a contest and give out prizes for various categories. In December we have a holiday party and in March, we celebrate St. Patrick's Day when Tim Murphy comes dressed in green and entertains us with his wonderful Irish humor. Many times a year we have a program with a special theme. Refreshments are served at all these events.

We have a yearly luncheon for members. More about the next luncheon in the next issue of the Leisure World News and at our future meetings, when we will be able to give the date, time, place and cost.

In 1991 we complied our first "Digest of Humor: entitled "For Laughing Out Loud." And have now completed our forth joke book. This has brought a lot of joy to those who have received our books.

We have a Traveling Troupe who performs gigs for organizations and people celebrating an event. If interested in finding out more about this, call Jack Meinick at 301‑598‑7858.

Our Club motto: Laughter Is the Best Medicine. It is a tranquilizer with no adverse side effects. The Comedy and Humor Club is proof that laughter is good medicine.

Are you curious about our club? Be our guest, on your visit and experience the singing, celebrations, jokes, skits and teasing that goes on with this friendly, fun loving group.. You don't have to be a performer. We need listeners and clappers as well. We meet every Tuesday in the Exercise Room at Clubhouse I at 1:30 PM. See you there.

Members: Mark your calendars for our holiday party on Tuesday, Dec. 16 at 1:30 PM. Roy and Laura Rosfeld are making plans for your enjoyment. Laura is in charge of the decorations and Roy will be organizing the fun program with songs, stories and jokes. Mim Parizer will also participate in the program.

This is a good time of the year to give our joke book as gifts to those recuperating or shut-ins or as a thank you gift when invited to dinner. It is an unusual publication and can be purchased at our club either before or after our meetings. With your $5 purchase, you will also receive free of charge a pen that laughs. The pens are going fast, so do not hesitate.

On Tuesday, Nov. 8, it was a cold and windy day. Our attendance was not as large as we get on a milder day. Actually the members who attended were many of our regular participants. President Flora Feld opened the festivities and we all sang “Amapola.”

Mim, our MC for the day, called on Rose Papier who read “How to Stay Young,” which was written by George Carlin. Next was Marvin Swartz, Sam Hack, Jack Melnick, Stuart Bonwit, Flora, Marty Brownstein, Jerry Kurman, Betty Lesser, Millie Siegel and this writer. Mim not only told some jokes, but called on Roy to lead us in singing, “When You Are Smiling.” Roy then treated us to some clever songs. A catchy one was “I Know a Lady That Swallowed a Fly.” Beverly Itzkowitz told a funny story from memory and many of us remarked that even though we had a smaller group than usual, we had a great session with a lot of laughs.

This is a quote from James Barrie: “Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.” Speaking of sunshine, this writer will be flying to Florida to enjoy the sunshine and warmer temperatures. Roy will again be writing this column while I am away.

Remember our club’s motto: “Laughter is the best medicine. It is a tranquilizer with no adverse side effects.” Therefore, the club invites residents to be our guest and visit our fun session any Tuesday at 1:30 PM in Clubhouse II and experience the humor our club provides.

They say, if you give a smile, you get one back—so if you give a laugh, you are sure to get one back when you visit our club. In the meantime, keep a positive attitude, stay in good health, laugh a lot and keep smiling.

11.21.08

On Tuesday, October 18, 2008, President Flora Feld opened the Halloween festivities by introducing Roy Rosfeld who was the Emcee for the day.  After his opening remarks he called on Dolly Bennof to sing.  Then he and Dolly led the singing.   There were gags and jokes told.   Roy then introduced the jokesters of the day.  They were Marty Brownstein, and Fred Firnbacher.   Marvin Swartz and Betty Lesser did a two part skit which they composed and recited.  Flora Feld told a story about a couple’s mix up at a costume party.

Music was played and the costumed members marched in the parade.  They ended at the podium where Jack Melnick (dressed as a pirate, with a long, grey beard) interviewed everyone as to what their costume represented.   This writer led the parade, and when asked by Jack what my name was, I answered, “Patty Picasso.”  I explained that in addition to wearing a painter’s costume, I had a pallet, brush, and mirror, and said I planned to do a self-portrait.  Sally Barchat was next and said she was a Happy Tourist.  Rose Papier were a tiara on her head, and was dressed as “Queen for A Day” she announced.  This actually happened in 1950, and she carried the pictures to prove it.  Irene Spector was dressed as a nurse and wore a sign that stated, “I Give Flu Shots.”   However, she had no customers.  The needle she carried was about 16 inches long.  Jack then interviewed David Rieff who was dressed in a Chinese outfit.  Ellie Weingarten told Jack that she was not Carman Miranda, but Mama Miranda, and Greta Galef said she was Papa Miranda.  Their interview with Jack was hilarious.  Esther Sturner wore a pretty outfit and called herself a Spanish Senorita.  Millie Siegel told Jack that she was a flapper of the 20’s, and looked lovely with a fur piece around her neck.  Jerry Kurman wore a horrible looking mask, and called himself a monster.  Stan Favin, who wore a cowboy outfit, told Jack he was a Texas oilman.  Libby Leibowitz’s outfit was that of a witch with a tall pointed black hat.  Also in a witch costume was Fredda Rubman, and her hubby Herb wore a mask and was a monster.  Edith Harris wore a colorful outfit she said was in her closet, and told Jack she was a Hungarian Gypsy.  Roz Schuldenfrei wore a night shirt with a cat on it and had cat ears on her head and called herself the Cat Lady.  Estelle Donin was dressed as Minnie Mouse.

All those who marched in the parade were given smile pins for their participation.  It is amazing that so many of the costumes were items that were taken out of the closets of our members.  Their cleverness and ingenuity are to be admired.   They had a lot of fun in discussing their outfits with Jack.

The judges were Dolly Bennof, Nelly Menick and Marty Brownstein, who had a hard time deciding who the winners were:  The funniest was the duo of Greta Galef and Ellie Weingarten whose colorful outfits represented Mama and Papa Miranda.  Prettiest was Edith Harris in her Gypsy outfit.  Rose Papier won the prize for the Cleverest in her Queen for a Day story and pictures.  Jerry Kurman was the Scariest with the horrible mask.

We want to thank Heather O’Keefe and Beth Davis, who are the Directors of Community Relations at Sunrise Bedford Court, who again this year, provided the refreshments which were delicious.  They also arranged to have a drawing of two gift baskets which were won by two of our members.  Laura Rosfeld made all the delightful Halloween decorations, and purchased the prizes for the winners.   Thanks to Sid Spector, our reliable photographer, who made sure to snap pictures of every one in costume, as they were interviewed?    He also took pictures of the other members.

If you are interested in purchasing our 4th joke book, entitled “The Jokes on Us” you may do so before or after our meeting.  These are great for thank you gifts, or for people who need cheering up, such as shut–ins or those who are recuperating.  The cost is only $5.00 per book, and with each purchase you get a free laugh pen.  That is until they run out—so don’t hesitate.

Our Holiday Party will be held on Dec. 16.   More about this in the next issue of the Leisure World News.  Curious abut our club?  Be our guest and experience the fun.  We meet every Tuesday at 1:30PM in Clubhouse II.  Visit this friendly, fun-loving group and enjoy yourself.

BY ROSE MARCUS 301-598-8777

Our club participated in Community Fair Day on October 24,  by having our table set with pictures of the members.  Many pictures were of us in our Halloween costumes the last few years.

We also had a basket with jokes, and asked the visitors to pick one to read.  Many enjoyed them so much that they asked if they could keep it, which we agreed to.  After all, we have a million of them.  We also displayed our 4th joke book, entitled, “THE LAUGHS ON US.”  We also gave out our flyers which list the names of the officers, and committee chairpersons.   One the front of the flyer is a picture of our club taken before a July 4th parade.  It was a lot of fun for us to share the laughter with the residents. This writer wants to thank those who gave their time to attend our table and tell people about our club.

They are:  Sally Barchat, Marty Brownstein, Rose Papier, Mim Parizer, Irene Spector and Marvin Swartz.  Our photographer, Sid Spector took pictures of our workers. They all did a great job, and we enjoyed being together and sharing the laughter.

On Election Day, November 4, there will be no meeting of the Comedy and Humor Club.

Since Clubhouse II will be used for voting that day, voters will be using the parking spaces.

We felt that it would be no “laughing matter” if our members were not able to park their cars for our meeting.  Therefore, mark your calendars for our next meeting to be held on November 11.

Members have been preparing for our costume parade for Halloween which was held on October 28. Results of the event will be in the next issue of the Leisure World News

On October 21, in the absence of our President, Vice President Marvin Swartz opened the meeting with our singing, “By Meer Bist Doo Shane.”  Fred Firnbacher sang a humorous version of “Lay That Pistol Down Babe”.   Roy Rosfeld and Fred Firnbacher did the funny Abbott and Costello skit entitled “Who’s On First.” Rose Papier came before the mike with a story entitled, “You Know You Are Getting Older—When:’ It was so clever.  Next was Marvin Swartz, Frances Simon, Blanche Cherpack, Stuart Bonwit, Sally Barchat, Fred Firnbacher, Marty Brownstein and Gloria Horwitz.  Dolly Bennof treated us to the song “Enjoy Yourself, It’s Later Than You Think.” Then came Betty Lesser, Irv Kabik, Sam Hack, Millie Siegel, Harry Kuptzin, Ed Heyman, Jerry Kurman, Rose Marcus and Jack Melnick ended the program.

Those who wish to purchase our 4th joke book, entitled “The Jokes on Us” may do so either before or after our meetings.   See our Treasurer, Rose Papier to purchase the joke book and to pay your yearly dues of $5.00 in order to attend our meetings every Tuesday at 1:30Pm in Clubhouse II.  Are you curious about our club?  Be our guest for 2 weeks before deciding to become a member.  Then you can experience the fun and laughter we all enjoy.  Visit this friendly group and enjoy yourself.  See you then.

OCT. 7, 2008 ISSUE                     BY ROSE MARCUS 301-598-8777

On Tuesday, September 23, 2008 we had a visit from Richard Boker, the Son of a former President,  Irving Boker who passed away during his term in office.  Richard and his wife established a Memorial Fund in his Dad’s name for the benefit of the nurses who had cared so devotedly for his Dad. He wanted us to know that Montgomery General Hospital wrote him that  ”The money was used for six nurses to attend a 6 day training program by MHEI – this program is a highly successful Healthcare Managers Leadership Institute Series. This program is aimed at assuring competencies considered essential in today’s healthcare environment. Not everyone is selected and six top nurses were selected out of our hospital to attend.”

Richard stated that he “appreciated that so many people have contributed to the fund, and that helping train the nurses is what his Father would have wanted.”  Those who want to continue to honor Irv, may mail their check with a note, giving the name and address of who you wish to honor and for what occasion, to the following address:  Irving T. Boker Memorial Fund, Montgomery General Hospital, 18101 Prince Philip Drive, Olney, Maryland 20832, Attention:  Debbie  Harner, Executive Director.

At the end of Richard’s visit many of us told him of the thoughtful things his Dad did for our members. He always opened the meeting with song sheets that the group sang together, and then did a solo of a humorous song. My favorite one was, “What Did Christopher Columbus Do With Friday on Saturday Night.”  He knew how to make us laugh, and developed a new personality during his presidency.

Irv sent us birthday cards, gave rides to those who needed them, helped with our refreshments, and  marched in the 4th of July parades with us.  In fact, on the back cover of our 4th joke book, the pictures of us at the parade for 2005 and 2006 shows Irv smiling along with the rest of us.  I want our members to know that in a phone conversation I had with his Son, Richard, in order to get information for this article, he stated that he appreciated the warmth and affection we have shown to his Dad and him.  Our group is known for its warmth and friendliness.  New people who visit tell us this.

“The Jokes on Us” may be purchased before or after our meeting. With your purchase,  you will receive a free laugh pen at a cost of $5.00.  It is a great gift as a “thank you” or for anyone recuperating. Once the pens are gone, there will be no more. They are very clever, and if you push the head of the man on the pen, it laughs. So don’t hesitate. If you are interested, see Rose Papier our Treasurer.

Former President, Jack Melnick is a JACK of all trades. In addition to all that he does, he organizes a “Traveling Troupe” for the club. They are available to entertain at celebrations. For more information you may call Jack at 301-598-7858.

Our Halloween party will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 1:30 PM in Clubhouse II. Prizes will be awarded for different categories.

Be our guest on your visit to our club and experience the singing, jokes, skits, teasing and celebrations that goes on with this friendly, fun-loving group. You don’t have to be a performer. Attention Members

We have a number of exciting events coming up.

Our next special event will be our Halloween Party to be held on Tuesday, October 28, 2008 in our usual meeting place, the Exercise Room. More about this in future columns. So be thinking about what costume you will wear.

Join the Holiday Fun

In December we will have our annual holiday party. Roy Rosfeld will be the MC for both celebrations and he always comes up with a fun-filled afternoon.

For the regular August meeting, Mim Parizer organized our special humor program. She asked our members to prepare to tell a funny or interesting story that happened in their lives. This is always a success, as our members enjoy sharing their stories with us, and a good time was had by all.

Those who participated were Greta and Stanley Galef, Ellie Weingarten, Beverly Itzcowitz, Jerry Kurman, Eva Katz, Irene Spector, Frances Simon, Marvin Swartz, Flora Feld, Marty Brownstein, Rose Papier, Fred Firnbacher, Rose Marcus, Dolly Bennof, Jack Melnick, Miriam Weintraub, Dorothy Dolleck and Roy Rosfeld.

Those who purchase our joke book, entitled The Jokes on Us will also receive a free laugh pen along with it. The book cost $5 and is a great “Thank You” gift, or for anyone recuperating or shut-ins. Once the pens are gone there will be no more. They are very clever, and if you push the head of the pen, it laughs. It is sure to tickle the funny bone of anyone who hears the laughter.

Did you know that Comedy and Humor has a Traveling Troupe? They are available to entertain at celebrations. For more information about this call Jack Melnick at 301-598-7858. While you are on the phone, ask him to tell you a joke. Pick any subject, and he is like a dictionary of jokes on anything you select.

Rose Papier, our newly elected Treasurer, is available before and after the meeting to collect your dues for 2008 to 2009. Therefore, please see her if you haven’t had an opportunity to pay the yearly $5.00. It is well worth it, as we meet every week, for a fun afternoon, and we do have a lot of parties and celebrations during the year.

On September 2, those who came before the mike were Rose Papier, Marvin Swartz, Eva Katz, Marty Brownstein and Blanche Cherpack. Ellie Weingartin and Irv Kabik were a duo with a funny skit. Next was Betty Lesser, Fred Firnbacher, Flora Feld, Sadie Morgan, Millie Siegel, Sally Barchat, Jack Melnick, Dolly Bennof, Mim Parizer, Jerry Kerman, Rose Marcus, and Ed Heyman ended our program. We all gave a special welcome back to Ed, as he has been under the weather for a long time, and it was good to have him back to share the humor.

Curious about our club?

Be our guest on your visit and experience the singing, jokes, skits, teasing and celebrations that goes on with this friendly, fun-loving group.

You don’t have to be a performer. We need listeners and clappers as well. We meet every Tuesday, in the Exercise Room of Clubhouse II at 1:30 PM.

See you there.
